The carnival of Rio de Janeiro is one of the most popular and awaited events in the Brazilian calendar. This celebration starts a week before Ash Wednesday, in February or March. The festival is held every year in Rio de Janeiro and is the highlight of the Brazilian year. Each float consists of a huge platform made of plywood which is approximately 20 metres long and 10 metres wide. The platform is covered with fabric and decorated with streamers, flowers, mirrors and lights to create a magical atmosphere. The construction of the floats requires a great deal of planning and attention to detail as they need to be sturdy enough to carry a large number of people. Each float can accommodate up to 500 people and they are usually carried by around 50 men dressed as soldiers. The weight of each float depends on the size and the materials used in its construction. This figure doesn't include the weight of the people sitting on the float and all the equipment and decorations that are used to decorate it. It takes approximately two weeks to build the float and it can be dismantled and stored by a team of 100 workers after the festival is over.
